We’re not leaving Springfield yet

Friends,

Today, we chanted the words “Unshackle Springfield” so loud we hope we rattled the windows across the street a little.

We’re proud that, thanks to you, the Faith, Hope, & Love bus was able to heed the call for faith communities to show up as federal agents have increased arrests of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio — including the arrests of two local pastors.

We provided the sound equipment for today’s rally to help spread the message.

Right now, Springfield Pastor Gilbert Joubert Adrien is sitting in the Butler County jail after ICE agents dragged him away from a gas station. A second local pastor has already been moved out of state and could be deported at any time.

Nearly 30 Haitian immigrants have been swept up by ICE across Clark County this month since their legal status was yanked out from under them.

Yesterday, before we arrived, we were proud to stand with Common Good Candidate Lindsay James, a pastor and state legislator running for Congress in Iowa, tired of being told by opponents that her Christian faith isn’t “Christian” enough.

It’s the same Christian Nationalist playbook in a different state.

MAGA Christianity supports cruelty in the form of ICE’s brutality, and it will do anything in its power to knock down anyone — including faith leaders — who try to stand in their way.

What they haven’t taken into account are all the people who are fed up and in the fight for the common good.

Everyday people aren’t going to stand around while pastors get hauled off to prison for no reason at all.

And everyday people can tell MAGA is lying when they smear their faithful local pastor as being “the enemy,” when what they’re doing is what their Bible tells them to do — including loving their neighbor.

We have to keep going, but this bus doesn’t move for free. 

We filled the tank on our Get Out the Vote bus tour in August 2024 at $3.99 a gallon. This week it was $5.80 a gallon.

That’s eighty dollars more every time we stop, and this week we’ve stopped more than once.

We’re staying in Springfield again tomorrow, and getting to the next town after that (in North Carolina!) comes down to whether enough of you give today.
