Trump is deciding which Christians count

Late last month, the Trump administration’s Justice Department released a 200-page report on anti-Christian bias in America, and I’ve been sitting with it. What it boils down to is a set of justifications for Christian Nationalists to target anyone they deem to be out of step with their agenda.

It has nothing to do with actually being “anti-Christian.”

I went through all of the examples in it. Almost half are gender-related culture war complaints, and most of the rest are COVID vaccine exemptions. Again, this is not about “protecting” Christianity or faith — Donald Trump has shown no sign he cares about that.

The Interfaith Alliance — which is led by a Baptist minister — said it very well: this report exists to provide justification to target anyone deemed out of step with the Christian Nationalist agenda.

This is a list of which Christians count and which do not in the eyes of the Trump administration.

For more proof of that, consider this. The Biden administration had a rule protecting houses of worship from ICE raids. It was one of the most concrete protections for religious freedom on the books, but Trump rescinded it. 

Congregation sizes in immigrant churches dropped immediately as families stopped showing up out of fear under Trump 2.0. We saw the results of that firsthand in Minnesota during Operation Metro Surge as we helped escort folks to church who were terrified of ICE agents but still wanted to worship.

The MAGA administration’s attacks on faith are never-ending. Trump has attacked Pope Leo. He’s gone after my friend, Bishop Mariann Budde.

Trump’s “anti-Christian bias” report is not about eradicating bias against Christians; it’s about defining a very specific version of Christianity as a political identity and then using the power of the federal government to enforce it.

This is Christian Nationalism. This is a dangerous moment for everyone in this nation.

The most important thing Vote Common Good is doing right now is finding, training, and mobilizing the candidates who will actually replace MAGA in office.

This is how you dismantle Christian Nationalism — we need to flip the House blue in November and take power back from those who are ignoring the real needs of the American people in favor of their own agenda.
