One photo from this weekend says more than any speech.
Friends,
A striking photo has been circulating from this July 4th weekend. A Black woman is sitting on a DC Metro train, calm, looking straight ahead. Around her, filling the car, are dozens of members of a white nationalist extremist group called Patriot Front.
|
They’re wearing khaki pants and navy shirts, with white masks pulled up over their faces.
Hundreds of Patriot Front extremists had marched through Capitol Hill that morning carrying upside-down American flags and Confederate flags, chanting “reclaim America.”
They were handing out white Christian Nationalist propaganda and screeching about the corruption of youth.
This all happened on the weekend our country was celebrating 250 years of a promise that all of us are created equal.
Stephen Miller, one of the most powerful people in Trump’s administration, posted that it is “divine providence” that Donald Trump is president for America’s 250th.
|
At Mount Rushmore, the president told a crowd that Americans “kneel only before Almighty God.” He fear-mongered about communism (his new word for “Democrat”), saying it’s a bigger threat to this country than World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, or 9/11.
And his team put out a promo video featuring his face digitally carved onto the mountain itself, with his voice booming that he’ll be “the greatest president for many, many years to come.”
God asks us to welcome the stranger and protect the vulnerable, not carve our face onto mountains in self-worship and bless masked men there to intimidate our neighbors.

Seeing white supremacists invade our capital can feel very defeating. But we have a choice of what to do next.
Vote Common Good is here to make sure people of conscience don’t let those moments pass as just another headline. We’re fighting back, for the common good. This country belongs to all of us — to We the People.
Will you give today so we can keep doing this work?
