Leo said it plainly: I cannot be in favor of war.

Last November — just months into his papacy — Pope Leo XIV chose Lebanon as his first trip.
His motto for the visit was “Blessed Are the Peacemakers.”
While he was there, he met a Muslim child standing in the crowd, holding a sign that read: “Welcome, Pope Leo.”
Leo has kept a photograph of that child and has carried it with him ever since.
In this latest phase of the war, that child was killed.

Leo told reporters: “I carry with me a photo of a Muslim child who, during the visit to Lebanon, was waiting there with a sign saying ‘Welcome Pope Leo.’ He has since been killed… As a Church — I repeat — as a pastor, I cannot be in favor of war.”
Earlier this week, he stood at the United Nations World Food Programme in Rome and said that world leaders are better at feeding war than they are at feeding hungry children.
This American pope, mourning a child lost to war and the preventable loss of so many children due to famine. This isn’t a “political” position; it’s a pastoral one, and it’s something Christian Nationalism has tried very hard to drive out of American faith life.
MAGA has spent a year trying to dismiss him because Leo doesn’t let the powerful look away from the people they’re hurting. We’re taking notes.
