The New York Times Magazine is sharing our story

“We are trying to include religious people in the pro-democracy movement.”

That’s a quote I gave to The New York Times Magazine, which ran a story today about pastors and seminarians running for office as Democrats.

It’s not that we’re trying to evangelize the Democratic Party or make the country more religious; what we’re trying to do here at Vote Common Good is say, “Hey, wait a second, we’re losing our democracy to Christian Nationalists.” Folks realize MAGA doesn’t match what they see in their Bible.

People do not have to choose between their faith and their vote. Plenty of room exists for the faith voter in the Democratic Party.

The numbers are on our side. Half of Democrats identify as Christian, the largest single group in the party — and it’s a mistake to write those people off or treat them as a problem to manage.

Faith voters often feel forgotten, or worse, feel that the party has been hostile to them — lumping them in the category of MAGA automatically, even. 

We’re here to change that.

And it’s more important than ever before, while some people are trying to use God’s name to justify cruelty.

We’re in the Times because we’ve been sitting with reporters since spring, connecting them with candidates running for office on faith, hope, and love instead of fear. 

This year is a revolutionary time for it. You’ve got folks like Lindsay James, James Talarico, Robb Ryerse, Sarah Trone Garrett, Anna Golladay, Adam Hamilton, and other faith leaders we’ve been with on our tour so far. People are fired up to support them. 

The vibes are shifting, as they say.

We know — based on actual data we’ve collected — that if we can reach faith voters, we can make major shifts toward flipping the House blue in these final 6 weeks.
