In the first 14 months of the Trump 2.0 administration alone, ICE detained more than 6,200 children, including at least 500 babies and toddlers. More than 1,600 of them were held past the court-set 20-day limit. On an average day, ICE now holds nearly ten times as many children as it did under the last administration.
I don’t need a seminary degree to know that’s wrong. I just need to remember what Jesus did when his own disciples tried to shoo children away: he got angry, pulled the kids close, and blessed them. Let the children come to me, he said. Don’t stop them.
That’s the faith I grew up in. It’s not the faith of politicians who cage kids on a contaminated former base and call it border security. Christian Nationalism has spent years borrowing the language of the Gospel to justify cruelty. We’re not going to let them keep it.
Wrong is wrong.
That’s why Vote Common Good has joined Faithful America and a coalition of partner organizations in a joint action demanding Congress use the oversight power it already has.
Members of Congress can walk into any ICE facility unannounced, inspect conditions, and demand accountability. Right now, most of them aren’t using that power. We’re telling them to start.
