This morning, we took the Faith, Hope, & Love bus and stood outside the ICE field office in Pittsburgh with people from different faith traditions, praying for our immigrant neighbors and raising our voices against the cruelty being carried out by the United States government.
On the side of our bus is a question that I shared with the people gathered there: Who is the “we” in we the people?”

We have to answer this question every day, because right now, this administration is answering it with force.
Yesterday evening, in New York City, an ICE officer fired seven rounds at the car of a 28-year-old man named Oscar Belgal. He was struck below his left ear.
His 5-year-old son was sitting in the back seat.

No child should have to watch his father bleeding in the street.
As a pastor, I’m called to move toward people who are scared or who are being harmed. But MAGA Christianity has used Christian Nationalism to bless cruelty, divide our neighbors, and shrink the “we” so it only includes the people they believe should have power.

Someone on our team has been texting with their family member who’d voted for Trump. But this week, that family member texted back after hearing about all we’re doing and said that if they get to meet James Talarico, to please tell him he voted for Trump before, but now he’s donated to the Talarico campaign!

Raising our voices matters. But this government also needs a Congress that’s willing to investigate what’s happening, that’s willing to demand answers and hold this administration accountable.

Our Faith, Hope, & Love bus is already on the road. Then, from October 17 through October 28, we’ll embark on a 12-day Freedom Ride through 19 cities, eight states, and Washington, D.C. We’re retracing the route of the original 1961 Freedom Riders, traveling from Washington to New Orleans with civil rights leaders, faith leaders, artists, and members of Freedom Rider families.
From October 29 through November 3, we’ll be in Texas, focusing on James Talarico’s campaign against MAGA’s Ken Paxton.
When we stand together, the “we” gets bigger — that’s the country we’re fighting for. We have 25 days left to do everything we can for it and for each other.
