We believe words matter. We believe Jesus’ words and teachings matter. We believe the President’s words matter. We believe that the words of the President stand in opposition to the words of Jesus Christ.

While we do not expect our President to be our Savior, we also don’t expect his words to oppose the teachings of Christ. As people of faith, we will not give the President a free pass to speak words of hate, destruction, and cruelty under the guise of religion.

“Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.” –James 1:26

As Americans, we entrust great responsibility, honor, and power in the person of the President. We rightly expect the person in that role to live up to standards of decency, kindness, and truth—in their words and in their policies. Donald Trump has forfeited that honor by using the bully pulpit of the Presidency for repeated lying and cruelty.

It is crystal clear that Donald Trump has chosen to use the power of his words to harm the reputation of the Presidency, to attack everyday citizens, to debase the truth, and to speak crudely and with indifference toward both our nation’s most vulnerable people and our most sacred ideals. . As Jesus said, “the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person” – Matthew 15

His Words Matter is a campaign to remind us all that we have a President who uses his words recklessly, dangerously, cruelly. It’s a reminder that his words have consequences. By highlighting the President’s own words, this campaign points directly at the damage he has done to our democracy, our decency, and our republic.

As Proverbs 12:18 states, “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

It is time for healing the deep wounds of our nation, wounds made worse by the words of our President

“The things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person” –Matthew 15

Those from the Christian tradition are compelled to use our words to benefit others. This campaign will fortify those who feel the need to resist the evil that comes from his mouth.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29

The quotes from Donald Trump in this campaign are only a small sampling of the times he has used his words to show what is in his heart as he seeks to create discord and division.
