Help get our film on PBS — we’ll give you a book

This fall, our documentary film Who’s the We? is coming to public television stations across the country.

Working with PBS is a great opportunity to reach the living rooms of people who might never click on an email they’d perceive as political or seek out this conversation on their own.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that getting a film onto PBS doesn’t happen automatically just because it’s finished and we’ve been given the green light. You’ve heard the line at the close of every PBS program — “brought to you by viewers like you.”

Public broadcasting is funded, quite literally, by viewers like you. Including our film.

In order to get Who’s the We? distributed on PBS stations and into all of those living rooms, we need your help.

If you aren’t familiar with the film, here’s how we got here.

A few years back, a group of us got on bikes in California and rode east, 3,265 miles along the entire US/Mexico border, all the way to St. Augustine, Florida. We crossed back and forth more than once, sat with border patrol agents, migrants, pastors, ranchers, whoever would talk to us. All to solve the question: who actually gets counted in the “we” of “We the People”?

We’ve gone back since then to keep filming, adding new footage recently to bring the story into the present before this fall’s release.

What we heard stayed with us, including the fact that the desert itself is being used as a weapon against migrants. 

Our one-hour cut will air on public television this fall, while we will keep touring with the full 90-minute version in theaters and at community screenings in the meantime.
