Viles Dorsainvil left Haiti in 2020 after his family was targeted for their political views and came to the United States. He applied for asylum and became a pastor.
Now, Dorsainvil runs the Haitian Community Help and Support Center in Springfield, Ohio. That means that every day this week he’s been running defense against the Trump administration for people in his community who are now more terrified than they have ever been before.

Temporary Protected Status expired for Haitians across the country on July 27, and Dorsainvil lost his own protection the same day as everyone he serves. In an interview with the Miami Herald, he said he feels almost like a journalist right now — a voice for people who have no one else speaking for them, except no one is protecting him either.
Ten people called his office in a single day this week after getting letters from ICE.
The letters sometimes require people to show up the very same day at a federal office in Cincinnati or Blue Ash. Once people go, they’re given a choice then and there — an electronic ankle monitor or detention.

Some of the monitors have a 75-mile travel radius, which means people need permission from ICE just to drive to another county.
Dorsainvil and other local pastors have spent the past eighteen months building a coalition of faith leaders across Ohio, ready to stand with the families being targeted by ICE and the Trump administration.
This is what the common good looks like. It’s the complete opposite of MAGA Christianity — the ones who are ordering the monitors and deportation letters.
