What ICE told the pastors

Today in Springfield, Ohio, a group of pastors described what ICE officials told them is coming for the Haitian families in their pews.

Yesterday, Temporary Protected Status officially expired for roughly 330,000 Haitians across this country, including thousands in Springfield.

Yes, that Springfield. The same town Donald Trump and JD Vance smeared with lies about pets in 2024.

CBS News is reporting that ICE has drawn up plans to arrest these families and put them on deportation flights to Haiti, a country so dangerous right now that our own State Department warns Americans not to go there.

One of the Ohio pastors, Carl Ruby, says he has people in his own congregation who were tortured in Haiti for standing up to corruption. Even Ohio’s Republican governor admitted out loud that deporting these neighbors means sending them “back to hell.”

These pastors are doing what it says in the Bible — standing up for the rights of those who need it. Meanwhile, the MAGA Christian Nationalists who campaign holding a Bible are the ones ordering the deportations and putting human beings in deplorable conditions.

We all have a part to play in turning the ship around. Vote Common Good is getting ready to embark on ours. We just need a little help.

Our Faith, Hope & Love bus leaves at the end of August, headed through battleground states like Ohio, Michigan, and North Carolina, to sit down with faith voters face to face. That includes a stop in Springfield.

We’ll be screening the longer version of our PBS film Who’s the We? along the way. The whole film is about immigration and who actually gets counted as an American, which is the same fight playing out in Springfield.

Right now, our bus is sitting in a lot, plain silver and blue. The wrap design is finished. It will carry Faith, Hope & Love on one side and Who’s the We? on the other, and the wrap company is ready to start the moment we can pay for it.

The cost before we can leave is $14,000. As I write this, we’ve raised $3,134.

Those Springfield pastors are sticking their necks out in their own hometown, and now it’s our turn.

The Faith, Hope, & Love bus will be rolling past churches across the country at the end of August, and it’s going to be impossible to ignore when it does.
