Archbishop of Newark Cardinal Tobin: "We need to participate in politics for the common good"
|
Archbishop Tobin recently wrote:
In this time of political uncertainty, it’s tempting to be cynical about the motivations and tactics of politicians and to want to disengage from politics. But in spite of what people often say, “politics” is not a dirty word. In fact, as Pope Francis forcefully reminds us, committed Christians and faithful citizens need to participate actively in politics to ensure the common good.
Given all the threats we face here at home and in other parts of the world, we can’t help but ask ourselves: In a time of political turmoil, is it really possible to sustain the vision of our nation’s founders for a free society that ensures liberty, justice and equality for all?
I believe the answer is a resounding “Yes!” But to be successful, all citizens must have reasonable confidence in their political leadership, and they must engage in the political process in meaningful ways.

With the Democratic National Convention just FOUR days away, we're in the final sprint to ensure that faith voices for the common good are resoundingly heard in Chicago.
We're really close to our goal, with only $8,500 left to raise. That's the difference between having a full team on the ground to support all of our events – or potentially having to scale back our plans.
|
We at Catholics Vote Common Good work hard to conserve costs wherever we can. In fact, we were able to save 70% off our original projected budget by bringing all of our own audio-visual equipment.
Since Chicago is a strong union town, we still need to pay union rates to set up and monitor the use of that equipment. And that’s fine! We love unions and we’re proud to support great paying jobs.
But it does mean having to pay an extra $1,000 for each of the sessions we have planned.
If you’re able to help us out with some of these costs, a contribution in any amount today will be tremendously appreciated.
While we’re on the ground next week, we’ll be training delegates on how to connect with Catholic voters, coaching candidates on engaging faith communities effectively, hosting panel discussions with leading experts on confronting Christian Nationalism, and showcasing that many faith voters stand for compassion, justice, and progress.
This is a once-in-four-years opportunity. The time is now. The moment is ours.
It's our chance to show thousands of politically engaged Democrats from across the country that faith voters aren't a monolith - and that many of us are ready to vote for the common good.
Remember, we're not just attending - we're actively shaping the conversation.
