We’re Making the Right Nervous
When powerful interests try to silence you, it is often a sign that your work is making a difference.
Our heartfelt thanks to Professor Steven P. Millies for his outstanding Religion News Service commentary examining Trump-aligned CatholicVote’s attempt to force Catholics Vote Common Good to abandon our name.
On July 22, attorneys representing CatholicVote sent Catholics Vote Common Good a cease-and-desist letter demanding that we stop using the name under which we have been publicly organizing Catholic voters. The demand relies on a trademark CatholicVote secured during the Trump administration—yet the organization waited approximately nine months after receiving that trademark to notify us. Its letter arrived just 104 days before the midterm elections.
As Professor Millies explains, the timing and circumstances raise troubling questions. Is this simply a trademark dispute, or is a powerful, well-funded organization attempting to eliminate a competing Catholic voice at a crucial moment in our democracy?
CatholicVote advances a narrow, Trump-aligned political agenda. Catholics Vote Common Good is a progressive faith organization working to engage Catholics around the full breadth of Catholic social teaching—including protecting human dignity, welcoming immigrants, defending democracy, caring for creation, supporting working families, securing affordable health care and housing, and promoting living wages.
No organization owns Catholic voters, and no political group should be permitted to dictate which Catholic voices may participate in our nation’s public life. Our faith does not belong to a political party, a candidate or a trademark holder. It calls all of us to protect the vulnerable, pursue justice and work together for the common good.
We will not be intimidated, and we will not be silenced. Catholics Vote Common Good will continue organizing, speaking out and reminding Catholics that our faith demands far more than loyalty to any one political movement.
They may want us to be quiet. We are just getting started.
